ما هو موضوع هذا؟

A triangle body shape describes hips that look broader than the shoulders, and the basics of dressing it are trousers that fit the hips first and, if you want a more even outline, more interest above the waist.

This guide sets out five basic principles for a triangle outline, such as:

- adding structure at the shoulders

- drawing attention upwards with ties, pocket squares and knitwear

- giving the hips and thighs room in your trousers

- vertical lines above the waist

- lighter colours on top and darker colours below

وغيرها الكثير!

Balancing the outline is a common aim, not a requirement, so treat each principle as an option to compare in the mirror.

النقاط الرئيسية:

01Buy trousers for the hips, seat and thighs first; taking in a waist is a common alteration, while extra room through the seat depends on the spare cloth in the seams.

02Structured shoulders, lighter colours on top and detail near the collar are the usual ways to move attention upwards, but none has a guaranteed optical effect.

03Rise labels and leg widths vary between makers, so check the waistband position and leg line on the actual trousers rather than relying on a fixed number.

04If your abdomen is also fuller, the Oval and Diamond guides cover fit through the middle.

The triangle body shape, also called the pear shape in some guides, describes a lower torso and hip outline that looks broader than the shoulders.

It is one of the seven body shape descriptions we use.

The description is about how your outline reads, not a measurement, and it says nothing about weight or fitness.

If your torso is also fullest at the abdomen, the Oval and Diamond descriptions may fit you as well, and their advice on room through the middle is worth reading alongside this page.

This page covers the basics.

الملاءمة تأتي أولاً.

Buy trousers that fit your hips, seat and thighs, then have the waist taken in if it needs it, and choose jackets that sit cleanly on your shoulders and fasten without pulling.

Many men with a triangle outline like to bring the upper and lower body into a more even balance, and the five principles below are written for that aim.

It is a common preference, not a requirement; if you like your outline as it is, keep the fit advice and skip the balancing suggestions.

  1. Add Structure at the Shoulders: a jacket with some shoulder structure if you want the shoulders to read wider
  2. لفت الانتباه إلى الأعلى: ties, pocket squares and knitwear that put the detail above the waist
  3. Give the Hips and Thighs Room: trousers that fit the lower body first, with a straight or gently tapered leg
  4. Use Vertical Lines Above the Waist: stripes, long lapels and open layers if you like them
  5. Place Colour with Intent: lighter or brighter colours on top and darker colours below if you want the eye to go upwards

1. Add Structure at the Shoulders

If you want your shoulders to read wider in relation to your hips, a jacket with some structure at the shoulder is the most direct option.

A padded or roped shoulder holds its own line slightly beyond yours, whereas an unstructured jacket follows your natural shoulder.

Both can fit well; structure is simply the choice for a more even outline.

A double-breasted blazer with peak lapels, such as those Tom Ford makes, adds an overlap of cloth across the chest, and the peak lapels point up and out towards the shoulders.

A softly structured sport coat, of the kind Brunello Cucinelli and many other makers offer, is a less formal alternative.

Structure varies from one model to the next, so check the shoulder on the actual jacket in the mirror.

For weekends, a rugby shirt with broad horizontal stripes across the chest, such as those Ralph Lauren makes, puts pattern above the waist.

Research has not shown that horizontal stripes reliably make a chest look wider, but a bold stripe on top tends to draw attention upwards.

2. لفت الانتباه إلى الأعلى

Detail above the waist gives the eye a reason to look at your upper body first.

A hand-rolled Hermès silk twill pocket square, folded to show a few points, adds a detail at the chest.

A Drake’s Ancient Madder silk tie, for example in burgundy with ivory pindots, gives a focal point at the collar.

For casual outfits, a John Smedley Sea Island cotton knit in a rich colour, worn with a checked cashmere scarf from Johnstons of Elgin, keeps the colour and texture near your face.

3. Give the Hips and Thighs Room

Your trousers set the lower half of the outline, so fit them to your hips, seat and thighs before anything else.

Choose a leg that runs fairly straight or tapers gently from the thigh to the hem.

A leg that narrows sharply towards the ankle can make the hips look comparatively wider, while a straighter leg keeps the line from hip to hem more even.

Leg widths and fit names vary between makers, so compare the knee and hem measurements on the maker’s size chart with a pair you already like, rather than relying on a fixed figure.

For tailored trousers, a turn-up adds a little weight at the hem and a slight break keeps the line unbroken over the shoe; both are style choices, and a plain hem works just as well.

A mid or higher rise puts the waistband closer to your natural waist, which some men prefer because it gives a longer line from waistband to hem.

Rise labels vary between makers, so check where the waistband actually sits when you stand and when you sit.

4. Use Vertical Lines Above the Waist

Vertical lines in the upper half of an outfit give the eye a path up and down the torso, which many men with a triangle outline like.

A charcoal chalk stripe suit, such as those Richard James tailors, adds vertical lines.

Research has not shown that stripes reliably make a body look longer or slimmer, so choose a stripe because you like the pattern rather than for a guaranteed effect.

An open cardigan, such as a Corneliani cashmere cardigan in oatmeal over a Sunspel Sea Island cotton T-shirt, makes two vertical edges down the front of the torso.

The Armoury’s Model 3 jacket has a long lapel that rolls past the top button to the middle one, known as a three-roll-two, which gives a long lapel line from collar to waist.

The Armoury describes its shoulder as unpadded and natural, so it suits you if you prefer a softer shoulder to the structured options in section 1.

5. Place Colour with Intent

A common suggestion for a triangle outline is to wear lighter or brighter colours on top and darker colours below.

The contrast tends to draw attention to the upper body, although the effect depends on the whole outfit and is not guaranteed.

For example, pair a Loro Piana cashmere cable knit in winter white with Incotex chinos in dark brown, so the light knit draws the eye upwards.

A Valstar Valstarino suede bomber in a warm yellow, worn over a Charvet white poplin shirt with Canali navy wool trousers, puts the strongest colour on top.

For evening events, a Tom Ford ivory dinner jacket with midnight blue evening trousers follows the same light over dark pattern within classic black tie.

Tonal outfits in a single colour are also an option if you would rather not draw attention to either half.

ما يجب فعله وما لا يجب فعله في التصميم

Do try tailoring with structured or roped shoulders if you want your shoulders to read wider.

Don’t rule out unstructured jackets, such as many from Boglioli or Barena; they follow your natural shoulder and suit you if you prefer a softer, more relaxed look.

Do fit trousers to your hips, seat and thighs first, and compare the knee and hem widths with a pair you already like.

Don’t buy very slim trousers that narrow sharply at the ankle without trying them on first, because they tend to make the hips look comparatively fuller.

Do try vertical patterns, such as pinstripes or chalk stripes, if you like them.

Don’t forget that bold horizontal stripes on trousers draw attention to the lower half; save them for outfits where you are happy with that.

Do choose knitwear in a size that sits cleanly on your shoulders; a chunkier knit adds a little volume to the upper body if you want it.

Don’t let a jumper or jacket hem end at the widest point of your hips if you would rather not draw attention there; a common styling suggestion is a hem slightly above or below that line.

Do accessorise with hand-rolled pocket squares and a tie whose width is in proportion with your lapels.

Don’t forget that a wide or statement belt puts a strong horizontal line at the waist; a narrower, plain belt keeps attention higher if that is the aim.

Do try a V-neck if you want to open the neckline and lengthen the line from collar to chest.

Don’t rule out turtlenecks and crew necks; they add weight near the shoulders, which can also suit a triangle outline, so choose by the effect you want.
